The Sunbay Park, located in Ninh Thuan, Vietnam, is a sprawling complex that includes a five-star hotel, two condotels, water parks, and numerous commercial and public facilities. The project, which started construction in April 2019, is set to complete two blocks by the end of 2021. With a total of 3,100 rooms spread across 55 floors and 282,000 sqm of Gross Floor Area (GFA), the project is a significant addition to the city's urban landscape.
The design of Sunbay Park is a reflection of the vibrant local culture. Inspired by the traditional dance of the local people, the building shapes are combined from different curves reflecting smooth movements and lively rhythms. The use of historical Champa culture patterns and colors evoke a traditional spirit in a contemporary design. Ethnic motifs are carved onto louvers and shading curtains, creating playful shadows throughout the day.
The project's unique properties lie in its thoughtful design that ensures a seamless integration with the surrounding spaces. The complex is designed to create iconic urban shapes for the city while ensuring urban ventilation and sea views for backside areas. The rotation of the tower blocks, calculated following research into the typical sun’s path, helps avoid direct sunlight from the East and West, thereby reducing total power consumption.
The design team, led by Creative Director Emmanuel Delarue, faced the challenge of placing 3,000 rooms in a site of 3.6 hectares without creating a wall or blocking wind. The solution was to separate and rotate the blocks, thereby maximizing the total number of rooms and ensuring all rooms have a sea view. This innovative approach required close negotiation with the local government and was approved in a short time frame.
The Sunbay Park is not just a design marvel but also a functional space that enhances the living experience of travelers and local city-dwellers. The key concept is to provide fully accessible facilities on the podium level to serve guests from any tower with the multi-level connecting bridges. Pools, lounges, and bars at different levels create various experiences for guests to explore, making the Sunbay Park a destination in itself.
In conclusion, the Sunbay Park by NDA Group Architecture is a testament to the harmonious blend of traditional culture and modern design. It is a unique architectural marvel that has won the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021, reflecting the designer's prodigy and wisdom. The project is a shining example of how design can enhance the living experience while respecting and reflecting local culture and heritage.
